Defensive Architecture in the Peloponnese (5th – 15th centuries)

1st ANNOUNCEMENT

MAY 2010

The 25th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Department of Architects-Engineers at the University of Patras are organizing an international conference on “Defensive architecture in the Peloponnese (5th – 15th centuries)” to be held in Loutraki, Corinthia, Greece, in May 2011.
The conference will focus on the historical and topographical frameworks of the establishment and evolution of fortifications, on typological issues of general design, and on specific issues of architectural language, construction, style, and defensive technologies (inventions, effectiveness, development). The conference will also address the unique methodological problems in studying fortifications including issues of terminology and periodization.
With such a general agenda in mind, we request papers that address the history and architecture of Peloponnesian fortifications between the 5th and 15th centuries, as well as papers that investigate the methodological and historiographical problems of this discipline.
Field reports on excavations, on restorations, or on monument protection do not fit the synthetic focus of the conference. Individual case studies from fieldwork may be used by the participants only if they clearly elucidate a general problem or debate.
The structure of the conference will be twofold. The first part will include thematic presentations by invited scholars. The second part will feature an open session of papers selected by the Conference Scientific Committee based on criteria of originality, intellectual content, and relevance to the subject as described above.
Papers can be presented in Greek, English or French.
Each presentation will be limited to 20 minutes. Paper submissions must be received no later than October 31, 2010.
Candidates are requested to fill out and e-mail the Participation Form along with an abstract of ca.500 words to 25eba@culture.gr, with subject heading: Conference “Defensive Architecture in the Peloponnese (5th- 15th centuries),” attention: M. Antonis GEORGIOU, 25th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, Ancient Corinth 20007, Greece, tel. +30 27410 31443, fax: +30 27410 32646.
